The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday released an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The ICC issued the warrant after it accused Putin of being responsible for war crimes in Ukraine, according to Reuters.
The international body charged that Putin was suspected of the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine, and the illegal transfer of people residing in Ukraine into Russia.
The ICC also issued an arrest warrant for Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, who faces the same accusations.
During the conflict, which is in its second year, Russia has repeatedly denied that it has committed war crimes in the neighboring country.
In a statement, the ICC said its investigation found "reasonable grounds to believe that each suspect bears responsibility for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population and that of unlawful transfer of population from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation, in prejudice of Ukrainian children."
